LYING IN HIS HOSPITAL bed, Levi looked at his phone for the tenth time in ten minutes.

Where is she? he wondered. It’s not like her to be twenty minutes late and without calling.

He looked up upon hearing boot-steps on the hallway tile. He sighed and smiled when he saw Rhiann in the doorway. She smiled back and walked into the room.

“Sorry I’m late. I ended up having two lattes at Marnie’s instead of one.”

“Let me guess – Irish Cream.”

The smile remained on her face. “You know me well.”

He enjoyed the softness of her lips on his cheek, and he relished the feel of her body against his side as she leaned into him.

“I saw Dr. Newton in the hallway – he said you’re doing much better today.”

“Physically and mentally,” Levi said with a sigh. “It’s still excruciating, but I am making progress. I wish you’d have brought me a latte from Marnie’s – the coffee around here stinks.”

With a grin, she showed him the to-go cup she’d held behind her back. “Amaretto, just as you like it.”

Levi grinned and reached over with his good hand, grasping the steaming cup and savoring the aroma.

“You are too good to me.”

She leaned down and kissed his lips with tenderness.

“We’re good for each other.”

“That we are.”

They shared another, more lingering kiss, and then Rhiann sat on the side of the bed.

“I spent some time at Marnie’s with that young man I mentioned who’s interested in the ranch hand job.”

“I found his resume in my email. Looks pretty good.”

Rhiann nodded. “Not only does he have some experience, but his character stands out to me. One thing about him – he’s a persevering guy. Kind of reminds me of you.”

She took his hand and held it. He leaned over and kissed her cheek and then said, “So, I take it we’re hiring said young man. Just how young anyway?”

“He’s a graduate student, finishing his master’s in wildlife management.”

“I think I like him already. What kind of ranching experience does he have again?”

“During summers in high school, he worked at his grandfather’s Idaho ranch, and he’s helped at Compassion Ranch.”

Levi raised his eyebrows. “The animal sanctuary you’ve told me about? Where Erin met Mike?”

Rhiann nodded her head. “They take in former research animals.”

“What did he do there?”

“Nearly everything, from fixing corral panels and fencing to walking dogs and feeding sheep.”

“Does sound promising. So, did you offer him the job?”

“I told him I’d talk with you first.”

“I assume you checked out his references.”

“You assume correctly, kind sir.”

They smiled at each other.

“You know I trust your judgement when it comes to people.”

She grinned. “There was a time when you didn’t.”

“Extenuating circumstances,” Levi replied. He held back a shiver at the memory of Dallas Patterson. “Ask him if he’s related to Patterson. I want to be sure.”

Rhiann gave a short laugh. “The young man’s name is Anderson, not Patterson. Gary Anderson.”

Levi raised his eyebrows. “He doesn’t work at the fish hatchery, does he?”

“In fact, yes, he does. Do you know him?”

“I met him a few times, yeah, when I did that two-year stint on the conservation board.
